South of Galway Bay lies the great limestone plateau of the Burren, a world heritage site, with its precipitous Cliffs of Moher washed by the Atlantic. Moving south we pass the Shannon estuary before encounting the several promontories reaching out in to the Atlantic with their attendent islands. The Skellig Rocks, Dursey, Bull Rock, Clear Island and Fastnet. Inishtearaght off the Dingle Peninsula is the most westerly rock of Europe and the village on Great Blasket was the most westerly community before its recent abandonment.
